Why your drain keeps blocking in the same spot

A drain that blocks twice is not unlucky. It is telling you something specific.

Clearing is not fixing

Most drain callouts end with the blockage pushed through and the water running again. That is a genuine fix if something went down the drain that should not have. It is not a fix if the pipe itself is the problem.

The tell is repetition. Same drain, same rough interval, usually worse in the wetter months. That pattern almost always has a structural cause.

Tree roots

This is the most common cause in the older Newcastle and Lake Macquarie suburbs, where earthenware pipe with mortared joints is still in the ground.

Roots do not break into a healthy pipe. They find a joint that has moved or a hairline crack, follow the moisture in, and then grow into a mat that catches everything passing through. Cutting them out works until they grow back, which is generally twelve to eighteen months.

A belly in the line

If a section of pipe has sagged, water sits in it permanently instead of draining away. Solids settle in that dip and build up until the line closes.

Ground movement, poor bedding when it was laid, or a nearby excavation are the usual causes. You cannot clear your way out of this one, because gravity puts it back.

The camera settles it

A CCTV inspection takes twenty minutes and turns the whole question from guesswork into fact. You see the joint, the roots, the crack or the dip on screen.

Once you know which of those it is, the options are clear. Roots and cracks are usually relined. A belly sometimes needs a section replaced. Occasionally the honest answer is that the line has years left and an annual clean is genuinely the cheapest path.

Worth knowing before you buy

If you are purchasing an older property, a drain camera survey is one of the cheapest pieces of due diligence available. A collapsed sewer line found after settlement is entirely your problem and can run well into five figures.
